"Rastaman Grove" by MorzArt

The Struggle Against Babylon
Growing along brackish water coastlines, mangroves are ecologically
important and biologically complex ecosystems. It is estimated that in
the last fifty years nearly one-third of the Earth's mangrove ecosystems
have been destroyed by pollution and commercial fishing, threatening
vast numbers of species that live among their unique roots structures.
The Rastafari emphasize a respect for all living creatures, spiritual
freedom and a natural diet. Rastafarians do not believe in cutting or
interfering with the natural growth of their hair. Their dreadlocks, in
part, represent their defiance and rejection of corrupt and decadent
society. An ever-present threat to their soul, the modern
establishment or "Babylon", refers to the oppressive imperialistic power
structure or governments which are unscrupulous and a perversion of
God's truths or the Word of Jah.
Just as Babylon stands as a threat to the mangroves that are
increasingly destroyed by pollution and human interference; likewise
Babylon threatens to spiritually pollute the Rastafari through modern
self-indulgence, exploitation and greed...and as the hanging roots of
the mangrove grow long to be nourished by life waters, the Rastas'
dreads grow long, by their rejection of Babylon, which spiritually
nourishes them closer to Jah.
Respect.
Inspired by a visit to the Mangrove
ecosystem along Black River in
southern Jamaica, this free-form
clay sculpture is kiln fired and hand
painted. Rastaman Grove’s tangled
web of mangrove tree roots
intertwine with symbols of
Rastafarian cultural style and beliefs.
While pushing the limits of clay
material, MorzArt hand built a 22"
tall clay tree that whimsically
incorporates the faces of Rastafarian
men; whose dreadlocks form the
long hanging roots that grow from
the tops of the mangrove tree.
